Little My Diary: Piña

This new section of my blog is going to be called Little My Diary. I want the focus of this section to be my old characters and art and drawing them again! More "translated" to my style, of course. I'm a bit sad to say that I don't really draw hedgehogs anymore? No particular reason why and I don't want people to think that there's something wrong with drawing that. I don't think there's much less disheartening than an artist denying or feeling ashamed of their roots. It's how I started and it's a part of my life I remember very fondly! The one I wanted to focus on first is one of my oldest! Her name is Piña and she's supposed to be the personification of... a pineapple~

The drawing on the left is the first picture I ever did of her, completely done in Adobe Illustrator (thank goodness the days I did drawings like these all in Adobe Illustrator are all gone!) The picture on the right was about two years later and it was done with Adobe Photoshop. Maybe I'll add on a more recent version of Piña as a hedgehog later, huhu.

A Little Chatter: Tuesday

Uh remember when I said I would do these weekly round-up posts like a while ago? IT JUST DIDN'T HAPPEN but because of some changes in my life I hope to be able to do them more often. I should wait until Sunday or something to do this but I just have a lot to write since I really haven't done this in a while? I'll go through that I guess, but for now here are some pretty wonderful things I've splurged on these past few weeks. I got the lovely prints from Frannerd, an amazing artist and vlogger (illustuber!) that I have become obsessed with! I honestly never buy prints but her work captures my heart in such a way I knew I needed to have them on my wall. I also got these mugs a few months ago but am still totally obsessed with them from Stuff I Love Blog. I've always wanted a mug that says "I am so blogging this" and she actually hand-makes these mugs so I knew I needed it! She also had this other one that says "You're a star" with a bunch of stars drawn on <3 And my last precious item is my Magical Girl Brooch... haha no just kidding! These are actually headphones inside of a really really cute case! They're a bit pricey but I got them because I watched a video from Michelle Phan where she whipped this out of her purse and I was like ?!?! Instantly snagged them.

The weather has been getting warmer and Hershel has been... having mixed feelings about it? I still need to write Hershel the Little King part 3 (which is almost done!) but here's a little update about him. He sleeps a lot of them time but when he's awake he is super rambunctious! I still think one of his favorite things to do is to snuggle with Josh and I in the morning in bed until we get out of bed and give him his morning treat. He still snuggles with his stuffed animals and enjoys taking them with him around the apartment. He really enjoys his walks but it has been SO HOT that he eventually just kind of gives up. Hershel was born in September so he hasn't experienced weather this warm before. I think he still loves his walks but like... he gets home and he just collapses. We bring water for him throughout the walk and I think that has made the experience much better for him.

Wedding stuff! This was one of the many ideas that Josh and our families have been throwing around for favors and decorations but we ended up nixing it. What we decided to go with are going to be a surprise for those attending the wedding ;D We just ordered the invitations yesterday and we'll be sending them out soon! The closer we get to the wedding I get more filled with stress but also relief that it's almost here and Josh and I will soon officially be married!

Some big news! Josh and I bought our first car together! His lease was ending soon so we had to make some decisions and ended up deciding to buy a brand new car. It's our first "grown up" purchase together and we are so happy with our decision. It was a bit of an adventure but I'm so happy we got to go through together. I bought my car when we returned from Spain and it also was a brand new car. So we're both very proud car owners, now! And we love love love our new car. It's going to be mostly used by Josh so it's like... his car BUT it's also OUR car, you know what I mean?

Josh and I have been making some lifestyle changes for about a month now and our parents have been very supportive. We've been changing our diets and trying to be more active! Dad surprised me with the bike I had asked for last year and omg it is a DREAM. I love riding my bike but I haven't really done it in a while and I had done so much research last year to find a bike that would be perfect for me and my riding habits. The Townie 7D from Electra Bikes in coral caught my eye but I never found the time to get it myself. It is a joy to ride and oh so comfortable <3

These lifestyle changes come with a huge change that will be happening in my career hopefully soon. I look forward to writing about that once I'm on the other side, but for now I'll just say that it's consuming my life. It feels really nice to be able to take a break and write about the OTHER things in my life that bring me joy. Here's to more updates soon!

Sketch galleries

Has it really been more than a month since I updated here? I was on such a good track with updating, too. I guess this post can kind of make up for the lack of updates. I haven't been drawing a whole lot but I did scrounge together these sketches to post up here. The top gallery is a collection of sketches from my sketchbooks at home that I haven't shown here yet and the bottom gallery are sketches that I doodle at work. Neither are very big but they do show some experimentation I've been playing with. I've been trying to draw my girls with a little more variety in body type! All these can be found over in Sketchbook 2015

Some Fabulous Years

Over the years Josh and I have given each other illustrations as cards for special occasions. I usually give him the picture as soon as it's finished and almost never document it. Now that we're living together we have all our illustrations together in a box and in frames around the apartment. I got a chance to look through them and It's pretty amazing how much time has passed. I kept a folder of everything he ever gave me and so did he. Unlike me, he kept his drafts of the pictures in one place. Mine are all over the place. I remember drawing these but over time I just kind of forgot what they all looked like! The Five Things I Adore About You book has more details here.

I have to admit the earlier pictures are more embarrassing .////. But they are all filled with love. I sent one of these to Josh while he was in Spain for 6 months! They all have a story. I got to see them all in one place and wanted to share them here. They are pretty personal but I'm so proud of them.

I think out of all of them I loved this one the most. I gave Josh this card for Valentine's Day while we were living in Spain. We didn't have the access to our art supplies as much as we did in our homes in the U.S.A so we had to make do with what we had. I used homemade parchment that we bought in one of our places we visited and drew some of our most significant moments. Josh and I were looking through the pictures and we found this one and each panel has a little memory from our time in Spain. What we ate for breakfast, how we spent our time together, how he used to wait for me outside my job every day! Then that last one was from the day we started dating. Not part of our Spain experience but still important.

My other favorite one is this one. I gave this to him on our 4th anniversary which is also the same day he proposed. I actually hadn't been drawing in so long and I thought I would just buy him a heartfelt card but decided against it at the last minute. I'm so happy I decided to draw him something for our anniversary and keep with our tradition. I hope we always draw each other pictures for special occasions because I think those are our best illustrations.

Thank you for being my biggest inspiration all these years, Josh. Thank you for always pushing me towards my dreams and reminding me that I am capable of achieving them. I love you.

Bee and Puppycat Invitations

Here they are~~~ Sorry for the horrible SAMPLE across the image, you can find the final finished versions under Sketchbook 2015. I couldn't decide whether to take artistic liberties with Bee or stay true to the original style so I gave the client the option of both. Version 2 was actually drawn first but the more I thought about it I wanted to draw something that looked a little more like Bee. I really love that show ;-; I want to try to draw her more.

Through this whole process the one thing that stood out in my mind was how long it was taking. I believe two years ago both of these would have taken one all nighter. Now it took me over a week? It was a bit disheartening. I haven't been drawing for such a long time that I felt rusty! Though I did feel like I was doing something really great with both pieces. I got to incorporate design with my illustrations and I think it came out pretty good. Version 2 was done completely digitally and version 1 was a mix of traditional and digital. I feel like I'm in a new groove and I'm going to just go with it :)
